While emphasizing
strong fundamentals, I utilize a holistic approach to managing my
students’ progress. Body, mind, and spirit are all partners in the
creation of an effective golf swing and a satisfying golf game.
Whether taking on a teaching, coaching, or encouraging role, I tailor
my instruction to match my students’ goals, skill level, temperament,
and experience.
I believe the
direction the ball takes is more important than the distance it goes
for most players. Direction is a result of club path and face angle.
In diagnosing a faulty swing, I concentrate on finding and fixing the
errors that cause improper path and face angle. Poor grip, bad
posture, and the failure to turn correctly, account for most of the
bad golf swings I see.
Of course, unless
the student’s muscles are relaxed enough to allow freedom of movement,
real progress cannot occur. I spend a lot of time working with my
students on their mental approach to the golf swing. Most people don’t
realize just how much their attitudes and personality influence they
way they swing a golf club. Sound swing mechanics are important, but
equally important is not letting stress, tension, anger, fear, or
false beliefs interfere with one’s natural abilities.
